Brief on the Northern Corridor
The Northern Corridor is the Corridor linking the Great Lakes Countries of Burundi, DR Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda to the Kenya Sea Port. The Corridor also serves Northern Tanzania, Southern Sudan and Ethiopia.
The Vision of the Permanent Secretariat of the Transit Transport Co-ordination Authority (TTCA) of the Northern Corridor is to contribute towards sustainable social and economic development of the TTCA member States through an integrated transport system that promotes local, regional and international trade, that is in tandem with the COMESA vision.
The Northern Corridor Sub region constitutes a significant portion of the COMESA Region. Some of the facts include:
- The Combined population of the Northern Corridor countries is about 120 million people which is about 30 % of the COMESA population (380 Million)
- The combined GDP of the Northern Corridor Countries is approximately 18% of the total COMESA GDP (2003)
- The Intra COMESA trade among the Northern Corridor Countries for the year 2003 constituted nearly 30 % of the total imports and 42% of the total Exports
